En 2016 surgi\u00f3 la oportunidad de probar la eficacia de la tecnolog\u00eda para la eliminaci\u00f3n de f\u00f3sforo (P) y la desinfecci\u00f3n cuando se aplica a peque\u00f1as\/medianas STW en Somerton STW.<\/p>\n<p>Posteriormente se organiz\u00f3 un ensayo en colaboraci\u00f3n con 6 compa\u00f1\u00edas de aguas (Anglian Water, Irish Water, Severn Trent Water, United Utilities, Welsh Water, Wessex Water) para validar la tecnolog\u00eda Polonite\u00ae. El ensayo se reanud\u00f3 el 17 de<sup>th<\/sup> de junio de 2016, y la planta funcion\u00f3 de forma continua durante 12 semanas (la planta tuvo algunos d\u00edas de inactividad durante las 12 semanas debido a problemas de mantenimiento).<\/p>\n<p>Polonite\u00ae se forma a partir de un mineral de silicato c\u00e1lcico altamente poroso. El P presente en las aguas residuales reacciona con el calcio libre liberado del medio para formar diversos fosfatos c\u00e1lcicos, que se precipitan sobre el medio. Estudios previos sobre aguas residuales con niveles de P total entre 5-20 mg\/l han mostrado una reducci\u00f3n a 0,1-0,3 mg\/l tras el tratamiento con Polonite\u00ae. Adem\u00e1s, Polonite\u00ae ha demostrado<br \/>\nlogran una reducci\u00f3n de bacterias de 99%. El mineral reactivo tiene una vida limitada (hasta 5 a\u00f1os a bajo caudal y bajo l\u00edmite de consentimiento para la descarga de P), pero una vez gastado puede ser potencialmente reciclado como un fertilizante rico en nutrientes, de liberaci\u00f3n lenta.<\/p>\n<p>Las aguas residuales despu\u00e9s del tratamiento por el filtro Polonite\u00ae tienen un pH elevado, que comienza en pH 12 y disminuye sucesivamente hasta pH 8-9. El aumento del pH se debe al alto contenido inicial de compuestos c\u00e1lcicos en Polonite, que disminuye con el tiempo a medida que se utiliza el material. Ensayos anteriores con corteza de pino demostraron una buena reducci\u00f3n del pH<\/p>\n<p>Los principales objetivos del ensayo eran determinar:<\/p>\n<p>- la eficacia de eliminaci\u00f3n de P de Polonite\u00ae;<\/p>\n<p>- el impacto del medio Polonite\u00ae en el pH y el rendimiento de la soluci\u00f3n de control del pH de la corteza.<\/p>\n<p>Los principales resultados del ensayo colaborativo Polonite\u00ae indicaron lo siguiente, seg\u00fan los criterios de \u00e9xito:<\/p>\n<p>- <i>P eliminaci\u00f3n<\/i>. La Polonite\u00ae se consider\u00f3 un \u00e9xito ya que elimin\u00f3 &gt;90% de f\u00f3sforo total durante las seis primeras semanas, tratando las aguas residuales a un caudal de 2 l\/min.<\/p>\n<p>- <i>Control del pH<\/i>. Se consider\u00f3 que la corteza tuvo \u00e9xito como estrategia de control del pH tras las primeras 5 semanas, lo que ocurri\u00f3 despu\u00e9s de aumentar el tiempo de retenci\u00f3n de la corteza.<\/p>\n<p>- <i>Desinfecci\u00f3n<\/i>. Aunque el tratamiento combinado de Polonite\u00ae y corteza no cumpli\u00f3 el objetivo de inactivaci\u00f3n bacteriana 99%, el efluente cumpli\u00f3 la Directiva de Aguas de Ba\u00f1o de la UE durante el ensayo, excepto en las semanas 5 y 7, y s\u00ed cumpli\u00f3 la inactivaci\u00f3n bacteriana 90%.<\/p>\n<p>Se est\u00e1 debatiendo la continuaci\u00f3n del ensayo en colaboraci\u00f3n, lo que permitir\u00e1 conocer mejor la vida \u00fatil del medio Polonite\u00ae. Adem\u00e1s, el uso potencial de Polonite\u00ae cargado de P se est\u00e1 investigando en la Universidad de Reading con muestras reales recogidas del tanque de Polonite\u00ae.
